AMD crossed the $1 trillion market value mark for the first time on Monday, September 21. Shares jumped about 9% to around $610 and hit an all-time high of $613.92 during the day.

The trillion-dollar chip club

AMD is now the fourth US chipmaker to reach a $1 trillion valuation, joining:

  • Nvidia (worth more than $5 trillion)
  • Broadcom
  • Micron

What's driving the surge

AI demand, on two fronts. AMD is Nvidia's closest competitor in AI graphics chips (GPUs), and it is also winning more of the server CPU market from Intel. Those CPUs are used alongside GPUs to run AI models in data centers, a task known as inference.

Selling full systems. AMD has moved beyond selling individual chips. It now offers complete packages that combine processors, networking gear, and related hardware, which is exactly what large AI customers want.

A fast rebound. Last month the stock dropped about 7% after a revenue forecast disappointed investors. Since then, shares have climbed more than 26%.

Why it matters

A few years ago, AMD was seen mostly as the underdog to Intel in PCs. Today, it is one of the biggest winners of the AI buildout. Its rise also shows that AI spending is spreading beyond Nvidia, as tech companies look for more suppliers and better prices.

What to watch

AMD's next earnings report will show whether AI revenue growth can keep up with investor expectations. At a $1 trillion valuation, the bar is now very high.
